Not Me !

1 Jn.1:8-9 “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins he his faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.”

One of the most difficult things for humans to do is admitting we are wrong. The nature we were born with fights truth in every imaginable way because we are all born under the power of sin. (Rom.3:9) We struggle with speaking the truth and living in truth (reality at the basis of life). Not telling the truth is a survival mechanism. For some people the battle is more difficult to fight than others. The fight is real whether the struggle is with small or large faulty beliefs. A lie is a lie, and an untruth is an untruth. You cannot make untruths into truths. It’s not possible though we may try.

In the natural mind we think we are right in what we say and do, and automatically we are determined to protect those thoughts. An admission to being wrong is a serious blow to our valued pride and ego. The same behavior was seen in the Garden of Eden. (Gen.3) It was the original blame shift. Not me! It was her fault, or it was his fault. The ultimate blame went to the serpent. The famous comedian, Flip Wilson, coined the phrase well. “The devil made me do it.” The serpent did not make Adam and Eve disobey. Their act of disobedience was a result of believing a lie. They suffered the consequences, and we have suffered from their decision ever since. We were all born with a fallen nature. We now have the choice of what we will do with that fallen and sinful nature.

The truth is we all sin. Rom.6:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” That is the truth! Not one of us are righteous or in right standing with God. Our only hope is found by embracing truth and abandoning lies. We cannot really let go of lies unless we see truth and chose to embrace it. Truth is the floating Life Ring to the one drowning in the wicked sea of lies.

Let’s look at the scripture about truth again with definitions.

1 Jn.1:9 “If we confess (acknowledge) our sins (wrongfulness) he is faithful (trustworthy) and just (equitable) and WILL forgive (lay aside or send away) our sins (offenses) and purify (purge) us from all unrighteousness (wrongfulness).”

If we confess our sins, He WILL forgive us and purify us from our sins. That is a promise, and God faithfully keeps His promises.

Self-deception and lies are born in darkness. There is hope for the one living in the darkness where lies are conceived. Hope is found in confession. To confess means to acknowledge. Confession is owning the lie and not avoiding, blame shifting, or gas lighting. Confession is YES I DID IT! That is the truth.
The acknowledgement of our sin, owning our sin, confessing our sin and repentance of our sin are the steps to living to freedom. To repent means to stop going in the direction you are going in (the darkness) and turn towards God who is the way, truth and the light. Freedom! Repentance is not turning towards something else that is not true to take the place of what is being repented of. Repentance is pursuing God with everything you have.

It takes great courage to face the darkness and the deeds done in darkness and to repent. When this happens, real freedom takes place. Joy and peace are found, and real life (as God has life) takes place. This act is called Truthing it!

You are loved!
