All His Benefits

Ps.103:1-18 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul. And forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies our desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel: The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children – with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.

This psalm is written by David. Chosen and anointed by God at an early age and he then served as Israel’s king for forty years. He was included in the lineage of Jesus Christ. He is known to be a man after God’s own heart, yet here was a list of this man’s failings. I encourage you to do your own research on this man’s life and legacy. You will learn of his faith, perseverance, sin and grief. In spite of what this man experienced, God’s purpose was fulfilled. “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed.” Acts 13:36

The words pinned in Ps.103 are full of life-giving truths. David wrote these words in reflection of his own personal experiences and what he learned of God’s very nature. He was a man who had a heart after God and yet he made bad choices that not only he suffered the consequences for but as well those under his care. David was a man who understood guilt and shame because of those bad choices and yet he moved forward and did not allow them to remove him from God’s purposes, all because he was a man after God’s own heart. O for this to be true of every follower of Christ.

For all who have made sinful choices and, have or are, suffering the consequences of those choices, please note in Ps.103, the things David learned about his God. God has not changed. He is the same today as He was in David’s generation. Take heed and do not forget all his benefits. These benefits are packed with promises and blessings.
