Finding Shelter
I remember the early years of raising children. One of our kids struggled with frequent terrifying dreams and nightmares. There were many nights when prayers were lifted while cuddling and comforting this frightened child. One of the most important things implemented in those days was the reading of Ps.91. Victory was found at the practice of pronouncing God’s promise to be present and his protection over those who trusted in him.
Scripture tells us that Satan is ever on the prowl, looking for opportunities to tempt and terrorize God’s children,1 Pet.5:8. Opportunity must not be given to listening to his fear inspiring lies, accusations, and continual condemnation. Once entrance is given to his lies he works hard to gain a toehold, then a foothold and sometimes we even give him free rent space in our minds. Do not give access to his evil harassment. He has come only to steal, kill and to destroy. Jn.10:10
The defense to Satan’s schemes and on slots begins with agreeing with what is true. It is critical to secure our hearts and minds in the truth of God’s goodness and his loving purposes for us. His word is truth, and we have the choice to believe and embrace his truth every minute of every day.
Consider applying Ps.91:1-2 to your life. Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, on whom I trust.”
The word “dwells” in Hebrew means to remain, abide or inhabit. This is a decision only we can make, for no one else can make it for us. We choose to take our refuge in only God. Trust God plus nothing! He is more than able, and he wants to take our paralyzing fears from us.
Maintaining a heart posture to stay focused on him is critical to victory. It is so easy to look with our eyes at something or someone else to provide a sense of security, comfort and hope. Trusting in our own reasoning ability and devised plans will have serious negative consequences. Part of the deception we can be drawn into is that we think we have a better idea or plan than God. He is the only one who sees and knows all the details of our anxieties and fears. We must choose to dwell and trust in him because that is where our peace is found. The Hebrew word for peace is Shalom, which basically means, nothing missing and nothing broken. Isa.26:3-4 You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.
Ps.91:1 We can “rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” The word shadow is a defense shade. In this desert region where the writers lived, shade is an added bonus because of the scorching heat. God promises in the heat of battle that he will defend you and he will cover you.
Along with our choice to dwell in him, we have the responsibility to speak of his greatness, power and protection. Vs.2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust,” which means my hope, my shelter, my trust. Say it! Announce it out loud! Declare who God is to you and your choice to rely on him. Remind the devil and anyone else of your conviction and determination to trust God the Almighty one who has delivered, who is delivering and who will yet deliver you.
