Our Advocate

1 Jn.2:1-2 “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father-Jesus Christ, the Rightous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”

The epistles of John 1-3 abundantly address the subjects of truth, light and love. Johns epistles run congruently with his writing of the Gospel of John. This apostle was the expert on these subjects and could write about these things because he lived in close proximity to Jesus and watched how Jesus served people every single day. Miracles were performed, sins were forgiven, hope was offered, and light chased darkness away.

Jesus knew our humanity and all its struggles because he too experienced them in every way just as we do. (Heb.2:18) He knew the internal pressure that temptation presents. He knew the ache of the heart and he knew grief in its deepest presentation. It is that reality that moved and still moves him to extend compassion towards humanity and all its brokenness because of sin. Jesus is the great Advocate and your personal Advocate.

In all of Johns Epistles he strongly writes readers repeatedly to walk in the light and not in darkness, to walk in truth and not lies, to walk in love and not hate.

John’s writings give hope, comfort and encouragement because the road of humanity is very hard. From the time of the first breath to the last exhale, man fights for life because there is a very real enemy (satan) who’s only purpose is to take life.

Because of that reality, we need to know someone is in our corner, someone is cheering us on, someone is defending us publicly before all of heaven. That Advocate is God’s son, Jesus Christ. Not only is he the perfect Advocate, but he’s also the Savior of the world, he is the only Way, the only Truth and the only Life.

Let me say it again, you have your very own personal advocate. Not just any advocate but God himself. He is for you and not against you. He is speaking good things on your behalf because he has seen who you are, the good and right things you have done and are doing. He is speaking words of life and not death and condemnation about you. The great Advocate is before the throne of God, right now, interceding for you.

In the Greek language the word advocate stresses urging or pleading. It also means counselor, intercessor and comforter. In the English language the synonyms are to support, uphold, back and champion. All of these words mean to favor actively one that meets opposition. To uphold implies extended support given to something or someone attacked. To back someone means to support by lending assistance to the one who is failing or falling. To champion suggests publicly defending one unjustly attacked or too week to advocate his or her own cause.

You have an Advocate! He is Jesus Christ the Son of God. He loves you so much that he became the atoning sacrifice for you and the whole world. The atoning sacrifice means he is the expiator or the one who makes amends for us. Jesus Christ is the Advocate who personally paid the penalty of our sin.

He stands interceding for you this very moment. He sent the Spirit of Truth, the Holy Spirit to earth to be our Aid, our Counselor, and Comforter. Jn.16:7,12, and 14.

Rom. 8:26 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with wordless groans.”

Jesus Christ is interceding for us and the Holy Spirit is interceding for us… How can you lose in this fight?

You are so valuable that God The Father, God The Son, and God The Holy Spirit are publicly defending you. You are a treasured possession of your Heavenly Father. He is for you and not against you. You will get through the opposition and accusations of the enemy and anyone choosing to align with him.

In light of this truth, is there someone in your life who needs an advocate? Share this Good News with someone needing encouragement. Maybe there is someone in your sphere of influence who needs your advocacy? Maybe its you!

You are loved!
