What is Truth

The Roman Governor named Pilate was having a conversation with Jesus Christ regarding the accusations, judgment, and his proposed punishment.

Jn.18:37-38 You are a king then! Said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” “What is truth?” retorted Pilate.

Pilate’s simple question was and is now of great significance to all of us. Truth has everything to do with life, freedom and where we put our trust. Putting weight on something or someone not true is devastatingly painful.

The word truth is defined in the Greek language as “the reality lying at the basis of an appearance, the manifested, veritable essence of a matter.” Verity means “trueness, conformity to reality or actuality.”

To engage in something or with someone not authentic or true leads to being hopelessly lost. Being lost is filled with the fear of harm and hopeless misery.

Jn.14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

There is no one or thing that can open the door to God the Father’s presence. Jesus always has been and forever will be the only way to the Father. He is the only truth, and true life is only found in him.

Truth stands in contrast to the world we live in. We lack certainty in our surrounding reality, and we are increasingly aware of man’s general lack of trust. That lack of trust is steadily gaining ground every day. People are trying their best to make significant and important choices in life while desperately searching for what is true or right to base decisions on. In today’s world we live in suspicion of television, radio, and internet news channels. We question whether they are in fact telling the truth. The lack of truth fuels insecurity, distrust, fear, and it certainly torments.

In spite of the uncertainty of our world reality, truth does exist. Truth provides security and certainty to make good decisions which lend to building sound foundations for living a secure, full, and joyful life.

Jn.8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Truth has everything to do with light and darkness. Being able to clearly see as opposed to being blind and immersed in complete and utter darkness. Not being able to see makes one insecure while stumbling around trying to find a safe path.
Truth is reality, it is fact! It is unalterable and has no variations or degrees, it is absolute and not relative in every aspect. Truth is starkly opposite to lies or deceptions. Building on lies is like building an already condemned building. It is not habitable nor ever will be.

Authenticity is another way of describing truth.  Authentic means “of undisputed origin; genuine. It means to act and express yourself in a way that aligns with your true self, beliefs, and values, without trying to conform to societal expectations or portray a false image. It’s about being honest and real with yourself and others.” Being authentic or being a person of truth will bring about genuine liberty to a person’s soul.

Often, grievous traumatic life events provide the runway to the embrace what is not true. They become the path to survive. In fact, one’s own identity can be lost in the process. Finding ways of making your world work may feel safe but those things are not authentic and in the end bring about great grief and emotional imprisonment.

Truth is the key to the handcuffs that keep one bound. Jesus Christ is the truth. He is the savior for the captured and bound. What Jesus said in the Bible is true. Truth you can live your life by, truth that is steadfast when the false identities of ways to make your world work begin to crumble. Truth is the path to the discovery of who you really are. Truth is who God made you to be. Truths foundation does not come about from the pressure of the community culture you live in or the expectations of those in your sphere of influence. Truth is who God made you to be, and that truth will set you free.

You are loved!
