Truthing It
1 Jn.1:5-7 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
It is impossible for mortal man to be 100% true. We were born with a fallen and rebellious nature; one that was conceived in sin and rooted in deception. The deception that took place in the Garden of Eden (Gen.3) continues to be reality today. The father of lies and deceptions is Satan himself. (Jn.8:44) He was active in the beginning, and he remains active today.
Have you noticed how quickly a child learns how to lie? At a young age we instinctively learn the art of lying and deceiving. It is a mechanism of survival and self-protection in an attempt to rid ourselves from the guilt of our sin.
Just as Adam and Eve blame-shifted their guilt in the Garden of Eden by blaming each other and the serpent, we repeat the same basic behavior. There are many reasons people do not tell the truth. The “why” we lie does not justify or take away from the fact that we do lie. Our excuses do not nullify dishonesty; they are an attempt to somehow make lying acceptable so we can escape guilt or shame. This is our attempt to be self-righteous.
Re-read 1 Jn.1:5-7 again. “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”
The concept of truth in the Greek language is referred to as “truthing it.” It has everything to do with authenticity, verity, and integrity. A person of truth lives life in the light and not in the dark. It is in the dark that deception takes place. In the light everything is seen as it is, the truth. In the dark we stumble around trying to find our way. In the light, our path is clearly seen. Being people of the light means that at the core of who we are we live in the light. There are no shadows or grey areas in the light. There are no “white lies” either.
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his son, purifies us from all sin.”
All of us desire to have true fellowship (Greek- partnership, communion, communication, contribution). We cannot have fellowship if reality is hidden in a relationship. True relationships are built on truth because truth is the foundation for trust. Trust is what holds relationships together, especially during life’s challenging storms.
Truthing it means to be authentic, genuine, and real. The definition of, “truth is that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality.” Truthing it is integrity (the equal sum of all its parts). Truthing it, means you are the same person while at work, at home, at church, at the grocery store, and at your sporting event. Truthing it is the “what you see is what you get” reality at its base.
We cannot live out truth as God intended us to without knowing truth. Jn.14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Truthing it begins with an honest vulnerable relationship with the God of truth. It is coming to Him in acknowledgment, ownership and confession of our sin, our missteps, side slips, and our premeditated acts of disobedience.
The truth is that we have a savior, our High Priest, an Intercessor, and an Advocate. He knows why we hide in darkness and avoid truth.
Heb.4:15-16 “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
In truth one can live in hope. In truth, genuine life can take place. Without truth, deception is reality, and an unending pursuit of survival takes place. Lies often are compounded and a person has a difficult time distinguishing between what is the truth and what is the lie. Living in truth delivers man from sins deceptive snare.
Truthing it requires your courage. God will provide the grace you need to be a person of truth. The ownership and confession of our sin will deeply anchor our relationship with our Heavenly Father. A side benefit of truth is that honest relationships have a foundation to build and flourish on. Love thrives on the foundation of truth!
